"But you're her little girl." The phrase rang in Caroline's head, repeating itself over and over. Her stomach churned, she felt the fiery liquid start to move upward as she dashed to the bathroom. She dropped to her knees just in time as the contents of her stomach poured out.
'Of all the things Andy could have said, she had to say that,' Caroline thought as she felt her body heave. Resting her head on her arms as her body leaned against the toilet she sighed, forcing her body to calm, 'Another night alone on the bathroom floor,' she thought. 'What a surprise.'
It was then that she felt fingers run through her hair, pushing it out of her face. She knew the touch; she'd grown up with it, and despite herself nuzzled into it.
"Andy," Caroline croaked out, "Andy, please just… just go."
"No Cara," Andy said soothingly, lightly rubbing her back, "I can't do that sweetheart I promised your…" she paused, "I'll never leave you or your sister; we're a family Caroline."
"Andy," Caroline's voice was cracking, and for the first time Andy could hear how broken she truly was. "Andy please… I can't, I'm not strong enough… I, I need you to leave."
Tears had started to slip slowly down her cheeks. She no longer resembled the hardened bitch that ran the fashion industry, but the little girl who hid under her covers because Andy told her that her covers had magical powers. Caroline Ann Priestly had shattered.
Andy slipped her arms around Caroline; the younger girl initially shivered at the touch but soon melted into it.
"Let’s get you into bed Cara, come on." Andy started lifting her up. She sighed as she realized how light Caroline was. At that point she realized that things were worse than she had thought. If Andy were anyone else, if Caroline were in any other situation, she would have never allowed herself to be carried. But for tonight—and tonight only she told herself—it was okay. She nuzzled into Andy, inhaling her scent, and let herself be taken care of.
Andy wasn't sure of what had come over her; it was a complicated mix of maternal instinct and something she couldn't quite pin down. She felt Caroline inhale deeply and instantly knew what she was doing. She used to do the same thing to her wife some years ago. She remembered the first time she was able to do that to Miranda. The sense of calmness and peace that washed over her was, and is to this day, unparalleled. Despite how wrong she knew it was, she couldn't find it in herself to deny Caroline that feeling.
She pulled back the covers on the bed and laid Caroline down. Sighing, Andy lifted Caroline's dirty shirt off. She ran her fingers over Caroline's thin form.
"Cara," she breathed out, "when's the last time you had a decent meal?"
Caroline curled into herself, turning her head into the pillow. "Not tonight Andy," she mumbled.
Andy merely sighed in reply, rummaging through the dresser drawers for a t-shirt. She changed into a pair of Caroline's shorts and borrowed a t-shirt. Walking back to the bed, she took a moment to look at Caroline. The image tugged sharply at her heart.
"Cara, sit up," Andy requested in soft soothing voice.
Caroline did as she was told, relishing in the touch of Andy's hands on her skin. She looked up at Andy, their eyes meeting. Andy leaned forward and pressed her lips to Caroline's forehead. Caroline's eyes closed as she wrapped her arms around Andy's waist pulling her closer.
After a few minutes Andy pulled back, "Lay down Cara," she whispered.
Caroline reluctantly lay down as Andy had asked. She closed her eyes, willing away the pain she felt from not having Andy next to her. Suddenly, she felt a pair of arms slip around her and a body spoon against hers. A warmth that she had never felt before flooded through her body. She nuzzled closer into Andy, placing her own arms on top of hers and entangled their fingers.
"Chocolate-chip pancakes for breakfast tomorrow Cara," Andy mumbled against her shoulder.
That night, for the first time in years, Caroline Ann Priestly slept with a smile on her face in the arms of the one she loved.
giddy
I'm glad Andy is there to comfort her but I wonder what will happen between them now that Caroline's feelings are out in the open.
